White bread’s ingredients make most people assume it’s healthy. Sadly, no. Modern white flour is highly processed and its products are more wasteful than nutritious. Avoid them! This edition of Florida Herb House Green Gossip compares whole grain flour products versus enhanced flour products and explains why you should avoid them.
Bread, cereal, cakes, cookies, and other staples would not exist without flour like Aashirvaad atta. Flour is ground seeds, nuts, vegetables, fruits, and grains. Check the ingredients before making a tasty instant mashed potato. Potato starch tasted. Most US food flour is ground from wheat kernels. Wheat mills smash and grind these tiny grains into flour. So what? Healthy. Wheat flour prepared traditionally would be healthier. Wheat grains provide vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Do you think flour wastes those necessary nutrients? No! No!
Wheat grains have bran, germ, and endosperm. They contain vital vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), E, folic acid, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, selenium, and zinc. Whole grains contain beta-glucans, lignans, tocotrienols, phytoestrogens, and phytic acid. These natural antimicrobials boost immunity as antioxidants. Unfortunately, “enhanced flour” or “enriched flour as the major ingredient” suggests that just the bran of the wheat grain is used to manufacture the flour. Enriched flour is bran and germ-free. If you don’t buy “whole grain” or “whole wheat” bread, muesli, or baked products, you’re missing two important wheat benefits. Food corporations don’t cheat. Selling wheat bran and wheat germ separately generates revenue. Don’t imagine huge firms care about your daily nutrition.
Food makers sell “bran” and “germ” from wheat grains processed at factories. The “germ” is bleached with harmful chemicals including benzoyl and acetone peroxide. The FDA requires vitamin and mineral fortification of white flour because it lacks nutrition. Enriched white flour lacks nutrients. Acrylamide, present in “white” processed foods like white rice and wheat, is another hidden risk. Acrylamide, a carcinogen, can cause long-term health issues. Scientists don’t know why this chemical is linked to white processed meals, but they’re researching this worrisome statistic.
The healthiest bread is obvious. Phytonutrients, found in all whole-grain flours, were not considered in the above nutritional analysis. These potent free radical scavengers can boost your health if you exclusively buy “whole grain” and “whole grain” items. Scientists worldwide are studying phytonutrients. Plant compounds are potent antioxidants, revealing light on cancer and other terrible diseases. Switch to “whole grains” or “whole foods” today to boost your family’s life insurance.
