Brown hydrogen is created through the coal gasification process. Coal gasification is the process of converting solid coal into gas. Methane gas is produced during gasification, breaking down coal into its chemical constituents. Under high pressure and temperatures, coal is exposed to oxygen and hot steam. Gasification systems involve the partial oxidation of coal with steam and oxygen at high temperatures and pressures. As a result, synthesis gas is produced, a mixture of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and some steam. The synthesis gas, known as syngas, is then reacted with water to increase the hydrogen yield. The gas can be cleaned conventionally in order to recover hydrogen and the high concentration carbon dioxide stream, which is then disposed of after isolation.
