This American drama film directed and written by Frank Darabont received critical acclaim on its release, particularly for the fantastic performances of Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.

3. The Dark Knight: Directed by the genius Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight is based on the DC comics superhero, Batman. When a villain known as the Joker disrupts the lives of the people of Gotham, Batman is forced to overcome a series of physical and psychological obstacles and fight injustice.

4. Pulp Fiction: A 1994 American crime film directed by Quentin Tarantino, Pulp Fiction narrates various stories of crime in LA, California. The title draws reference from the crime novels and pulp magazines popular during the mid-90s. Pulp Fiction is a thrilling mixture of good humour and a ton of violence.

Tarantino received a lot of praise for its screenwriting, and it boasts of amazing actors like John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis.

5. Inception: Another Nolan masterpiece, Inception is a 2010 science-fiction/action film based on ‘dream stealers’ and lucid dreaming. A professional thief steals important information by invading the subconscious of his targets. If you’ve got a knack for some complex science-fiction, this movie is for you.

6. Fight Club: An insomniac desk-job worker is unsatisfied with his job and forms a ‘fight club’ with devil-may-care soap-seller Tyler Durden. He also forges a relationship with a mysterious woman, played by the dynamic Helena Bonham Carter. Also starring Edward Norton and Brad Pitt, the movie has grown to become a cult classic and is enjoyed by many for its action and edge.

7. Interstellar: The third Nolan masterpiece to make it to our list, Interstellar is a dystopian science-fiction film. It is set in a time when humanity is on the brink of extinction, and a group of explorers travel to space through a wormhole to look for another inhabitable planet.

Be it visual effects, action, performances, or even musical score, this film does it brilliantly. Interstellar is as likely to keep you on the edge of your seat as it is to be a tear-jerker.

8. Whiplash: A determined first-year music student bags a seat in the jazz band of a ruthless teacher. With stories of perfectionism, the effects of harsh authority figures, and a thirst to prove your worth, Whiplash packs it all in with a daring score of drums and jazz. Unparalleled performances by Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons makes it even better.
